Construction of Stepwell of adalaj or popularly know as Adalaj ki vav started  in 16th century by Rana Veer Singh of Vaghela dynasty.  Purpose for building this stepwell was to provide water to the locals  who were facing acute water shortage and had to travel a lot for drinking water. Rana Veer Singh died in a battle against Mahmud Begada, ruler of Ahmedabad, After his death Mahmud Begada wanted to marry her widow Rani Rudabai, queen accepted the offer with a condition to complete the construction work in order to solve the water crisis.  Mahmud Begada agreed and completed the work, and later on Rani sacrificed her life by jumping into the stepwell instead of marrying the Sultan.
